What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is generally considered a complementary or alternative therapy. Acupuncture does not work in all cases – however many people find it very effective, and many modern pain management clinics and NHS centres now include acupuncture among their treatment options.

During the treatment, a trained practitioner will carefully insert a series of very fine acupuncture needles into the targeted area. They will remain in place for around 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the individual treatment, before being carefully removed. The process isn’t painful, although you may feel a dull ache or sensations such as tingling. Usually, a series of sessions are required.

It’s believed the needles stimulate the nerves in a certain way in order to relieve pain and tension. More traditional practices also work on the concept of stimulating energy flow through the body.
