FAQ's

What are Ostenil Injections?

Ostenil injections were developed specifically to treat osteoarthritis. Ostenil is a solution containing hyaluronic acid. For this reason Ostenil injections are sometimes also called hyaluronic acid injections. Ostenil is a brand name.

Ostenil can be injected into the knee or any other synovial joint that’s affected by osteoarthritis. Synovial joints are the joints that help us move. They include the shoulder, hip, elbow and knee.

Within the joint, a thick layer of cartilage covers the end of each of the two bones that meet. A thin layer of synovial fluid sits between each bone, in the joint cavity. This fluid allows each bone to move smoothly past the other.

Hyaluronic acid is an important component of synovial fluid which helps it do its job well. Normally, the body makes new hyaluronic acid for the synovial fluid, whenever it breaks down.

When a person has osteoarthritis, their body breaks down the hyaluronic acid faster than it can make it. This means that the synovial fluid becomes watery and stops working properly. The cartilage grates and wears, and the joint becomes painful, stiff and swollen.

Ostenil injections replace the missing hyaluronic acid in the joint cavity. This helps lubricate the joint again, reducing pain and swelling, and making movement easier.
