Resistance Pilatchi
Resistance Pilatchi is a mindful, low-impact form of movement that uses bands secured to your hands and feet to create steady resistance while you move through a continuous, flowing routine. Created by UK physiotherapist Sean Searight, it blends Pilates strength work with the slow, controlled flow of Tai Chi, built on physiotherapy rehabilitation principles. There is no jumping, no high-impact movement and no aggressive loading. Most exercises are performed standing, which makes it a practical option for anyone who finds mat work uncomfortable due to injury, age-related conditions or hypermobility. It is also a good fit for arthritic joints. Expect to work on strength (including your core), balance, posture, coordination and proprioception, all to soft background music. Because the bands are attached via gloves and foot straps rather than gripped, there is less strain on wrists and fingers and tension stays consistent throughout the movement. All instructors and physiotherapists teaching Pilatchi at Physio on the River are fully trained, certified and CIMSPA registered. We provide all equipment, and take-home kits are available if you would like to practise between classes.
FLexercise
FLexercise (also known as the Bagot Stack method) is a UK-wide system of community exercise classes aimed at the over 50s, combining movement, dance and a good dose of fun. Classes are low-impact and non-competitive, and everyone works to their own ability. The system blends correct body alignment for better posture, joint mobilisation, muscle strengthening and lengthening, balance and coordinated movement. Classes are set to music, but with no fixed choreography, so Lidia can adapt each exercise to the individual while you still enjoy the benefits of a group environment. As Lidia puts it, it is in some ways Pilates and movement set to music. Classes at Physio on the River never exceed six people, so there is plenty of personal attention. FLexercise is particularly helpful for anyone over 50 wanting more strength, balance, flexibility and coordination, for pre- and post-operative strengthening around hip and knee replacements, and for people living with Parkinson’s, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis or general back pain.
Balance & Strength
Our Balance & Strength classes are designed for anyone who wants to feel steadier on their feet and stronger in everyday life. The focus is on building lower-body and core strength, improving stability and increasing confidence in movement. We offer two levels, Level 1 and Level 2, so you can join the class that matches your existing range of movement and progress at your own pace. Classes are small, run in terms and led by our experienced team. If you are unsure which level is right for you, our reception team or class coordinator can help you choose.
Yoga
Our yoga classes run throughout the day and evening and are kept small, with never more than eight people, so you receive plenty of individual attention. Classes are divided by level, meaning you are always practising alongside people of a similar standard and always progressing. They run in terms, like school terms, and where capacity allows we offer catch-up sessions for any classes missed. Individual lessons, duets and trios can also be arranged. Yoga is a powerful antidote to the stresses of modern life. Through the practice of postures you will develop all-over flexibility, improve balance and coordination, build strength over time and learn to use your breath with movement. Many people also value the relaxation and calm that comes with regular practice. If you are receiving other medical treatment, please check with your doctor or ask us for advice before starting. Our class coordinator Angela Ranger can help you choose the right class.
Dance, Tone and Stretch
An energising class that builds strength, cardio fitness and body control. Sophie draws on classical dance technique and Barre to improve your fitness and muscle tone, all set to music and designed to be fun. Light weights are used to tone the upper body, roller work helps with stability, and trigger-point balls and bands release muscle tension at the end of the session. Suitable for all fitness levels, and you certainly don’t need to be a dancer to feel the benefits. Expect increased flexibility and energy, and a real spring in your step. Two things to flag: the Pilatchi page footer shows the phone number as “020 8876 569” (missing the final digit) in one place, while every other instance is 020 8876 5690, so make sure the merged page uses the full number. And the Pilatchi page also describes Calm, Clinical and Mat variations; I left those out to stay under 200 words, but let me know if you want a line on them.
