What to expect when you visit a sports injury clinic
A sports injury clinic specialises in helping people recover from injuries experienced during physical exercise. Although we work with local clubs, you don’t have to be a sports pro to be afflicted with pains, sprains and other musculoskeletal problems. Many patients have simply lost their footing on a run or overdone it during a workout.
Sports injury clinics use a multidisciplinary team of medical doctors, sports massage therapists, physiotherapists and other experts. They have the specialist knowledge to understand and treat the often complex nature of sport-related injuries.
What conditions are treated at our sports injury clinic?
The body’s musculoskeletal system of muscles and bones – and the joints, ligaments, tendons and nerves that connect them – all work to give you mobility.
When done correctly, exercise keeps you strong and flexible. However, underlying biomechanical problems, over exertion or the sudden physical trauma of an accident while playing sport or exercising can result in symptoms such as:
- Bruises
- Difficulty moving muscles or joints
- Pain or discomfort in or around the affected body parts
- Muscular spasms
- Inflammation (swelling)
These symptoms have a large number of potential causes. The most common sports injury conditions that we treat at Ravenscroft Health are:
- Achilles tendonitis
- Golfer’s elbow
- Heel pain (plantar fasciitis)
- Herniated discs
- Hip and groin pain
- Injuries through overuse
- Injuries to tendons and ligaments
- Ankle. foot and knee pain
- Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
- Runner’s knee
- Shin splints
- Tennis elbow
- Torn muscles
What treatments are available at our sports injury clinic?
Ravenscroft Health operates sports injury clinics in London and Milton Keynes and offers a wide range of services.
Our specialised physiotherapy services include one-to-one treatment and group classes. Physiotherapists use tailored exercises to help you regain mobility and strength – and to reduce pain – both soon after the injury and in the long term. They may also use hands-on treatments to joints and soft tissue, which increase your flexibility.
In addition to a programme of physiotherapy, soft tissue manipulation and prescribed rehabilitation exercises, our other services include:
-
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a treatment for injuries and musculoskeletal problems. PRP enhances healing by using the body’s own healing system to promote tissue repair and speed up rehabilitation.
- Ostenil is a patented treatment, available privately, to restore mobility in knee, shoulder, elbow and hip joints. It uses hyaluronic acid injections to improve lubrication and cushioning in the affected joints.
- Electrotherapy to interrupt or block pain signals in parts of the body affected by severe or long-term pain.
- Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) – an effective state-of-the-art non-surgical treatment for various pain conditions affecting joints and tendons.
- Ultrasound guided injections in joints or soft tissue using real-time imaging technology to enhance needle placement accuracy.
Your treatment plan incorporates a rehabilitation programme which aims to restore you to full function. We will also recommend rehabilitation exercises to maintain strength along with guidance to help prevent you hurting yourself in a similar way in the future.
What to expect at your first appointment?
We understand the physical and psychological impact a sports injury can have on your life. We also know how important it is to treat the problem as soon as possible and provide you with a long-term solution.
At your first appointment we will discuss your medical history and thoroughly assess your symptoms. Additionally, we investigate any underlying factors that may have contributed to your condition. These could be issues such as a muscular imbalance, weakness, or problems resulting from overuse.
Our sports injury specialists, rehabilitation and pain management therapists will then provide you with a tailored treatment plan to get you fit and moving again.
