If you are suspecting a hernia, abdominal bulge, groin bulge you will benefit from having a Hernia scan.Â
It is important you specify the single area where you are feeling the bulge to ensure the best possibility to identify a hernia.
The scan will establish the type of hernia and contents of the hernia.Â

No preparation is required pre assessment.
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment.Â
The sonographer will gather relevant information regarding your concerns. They will explain the procedure to you.Â
It is important you specify the single area where you are feeling the bulge to ensure the best possibility to identify a hernia.Â
You will be asked to expose the part where you feel the bulge.Â
The specialist applies a clear gel onto your skin and moves a handheld scanner over the area. Images from the scanner are projected on a screen, and, from here, the specialist can see the hernia, identify the contents, and measure the size of a hernia if present.Â
If there’s a small hernia, this is unlikely to be causing much symptoms but you can be reassured that there is nothing to worry about. If the hernia is larger or contains important organs like the intestines, you will be advised to see a medical professional to see if surgery is an option that may be of benefit.
The clinician will explain the ultrasound findings at the time of your scan. Following your appointment, a complete digital report of your Ultrasound examination will be emailed to you directly with any recommended actions.
There are no risks or side effects associated with the Hernia ultrasound scan. Ultrasound does not use any radiation, here are no confirmed adverse biological effects on patients or instrument operators caused by exposures to ultrasound at the intensity levels used in diagnostic ultrasound.
